Don't Take My Black Away: I live in New York!

I promise I'm not going to take your black away.

I think this needs to be said.

There I was: so excited to exhibit as a business owner at a local vendor event. "Here I am world, I'm ready to serve!"

However, the day didn't go quite as I anticipated: 30 knot winds, vendor tents became projectiles on the library lawn, people seemed annoyed and uncomfortable in the wind as they clutched jackets and their children.

So trying to solicit business seemed a little obnoxious.

Instead I took advantage of the time by polling the attendees about their wardrobe and color preferences.

I polled nearly 80 attendees, and asked the following question: "Do you tend to wear black/white grey or do you tend to wear color?

61% of the men, women and children responded: "I tend to wear black/white/grey."

This answer did not surprise me, that's why I'm on a mission to bring a wee bit more color into the world and into peoples' wardrobes. (I'll share more on the "why" behind my mission in subsequent posts).

But I was surprised by how "self-aware" everyone seemed on the topic. No one really hesitated before declaring "team black" or "team color" the winner. Fascinating. (P.S: I find this kind of certainty very refreshing and P.P.S.: my inner coach is saying "yay for you, you know what you like!)

I still had much to learn from this group of dog enthusiasts:

  1. One woman volunteered that she wears more color now that she feels "happy."

  2. Women often answered for their husbands, and husbands felt that their wives answered incorrectly. For example, many women shared the response: "he wears black." And the husbands responded, "no I don't."

  3. People wear a lot of black because of "work."

  4. People wear a lot of black because they live in New York.

  5. At least three women stated, "I'm too old to change the way I dress now. And I like to wear black."

  6. Kids almost totally answered in favor of color.

I get it and I hear you. You like to wear black.

So here's what I think: i think we can have both black/grey/white/neutrals and color in our lives.

I am trained in color analysis (I still have more training this summer to complete) and am a Board Certified Coach (BCC). I am utterly captivated by both inner and outer alignment. I believe that color has the power to transform our minds and emotions into improved versions of ourselves. Stay tuned for "the how."

Color is emotional. Color is simple. Color is complicated. And the same is true of the color black.

My approach to color analysis is a "dual-color strategy." Similar to Sephora, whose iconic black and white exterior logo contrasts with the array of pink and red hues inside their retail space, I think we need a balance of color and black in our daily lives.

Black is timeless, elegant and serious. So I promise: I am not trying to take your black away.

Can we just ADD a little bit more color, people?

Can you sometimes swap black for navy?

That's it; that's all I wish to say.
